Using White Space

White space or negative space. It's the empty space in your design -- the part without photos, embellishments, journaling, etc. It gives the eye a place to rest and emphasizes the items that are there. Although in my layout I used white cardstock, white space doesn't have to be white -- just empty. I have a large amount of white space on this layout, which really makes my elements stand out.

Cathy Zielske, the queen of simple design, says about white space:

White space is about letting what you have to show and say stand on its own. It's about the drama of a good photo shining in all its glory. It's about giving the eye a much needed rest. It's about purity of intent. It's a calm in the storm of visual life.
